Keeping secrets is hard.... and I got an email from The Knitter a couple of days ago that I really want to share. But I am going to be good, and just say that I can't wait to see the next issue (37 in case you are wondering). Squee!
On another subject, we have instituted a new system at home - Monday nights are boy cooking nights. Now, I know that B&J are only just 10 years old, but as it took me until I had 3 children at home to learn to cook well and I want them to know before that! At M's new school they have this system, and one of the boys in the house cooks on a Monday for the other members of the house. It means they have to plan a menu, deal with a budget, plan a timeline for cooking and it can go towards their food technology, or whatever the DT version of cooking is now called.
So at home the boy cooking on monday decides over the weekend what they want to cook, we buy the ingredients and when they get back from school on monday, it's over to them. I might give some gentle reminders on timing, but other than that they are determined to be entirely in charge. As I know they can use a knife safely, and they will ask me if something heavy needs to come out of the over, I am fairly happy to be barred from the kitchen for the duration. I am not going to discuss the almost apocalyptic aftermath of a 10yr old head chef with occasional 10yr old sous-chef unsupervised in the kitchen. We have not yet been able to eat in the kitchen when they have cooked. It's an eating on your knees in the living room kinda deal. However, they can learn the clearing up bit later. I'm still learning that myself......
(Excuse the poor photo, snapped as Joe was plating up!)
So this was last night's main, christened Cajun Chickets by Joe. He roasted peppers and stuffed them with rice, sweetcorn and garlicy cajun chicken. He made this up, didn't consult a book the whole time, and it was yummy. Healthy with a good balance of flavours and textures.
Not bad, huh?
Sometimes, my boys make me extra specially proud of them. And that's just the way I like it!
And looking forward to finding out about the top secret secret - eek!
